| Founder of the state, cha-rismatic eternal president, centre of an absurd perso-nality cult. 'Great leader' Kim Il Sung is a very con-troversial person for foreig-ners, but his own people idolises him even 10 years after his death. After the Korean war, he has lead the country to a collective re-construction-euphoria, based on his 'Juche-ideology' of individual self-reliance and independence from abroad, accompanied by governmental repression and virtually complete isola-tion from Western informa-tion. But especially after the collapse of the communist Eastern Bloc, the increasing isolation lead to disaster, both economically and poli-tically, and very much to the distress of the normal popu-lation. |
